It is important to have the ability to try new things and continuously expand our offer.
Therefore, we do not only take on standard new build projects. We are currently building the UK’s first large scale development designed to formal PassivHaus accreditation via the Building Research Establishment (BRE). The annual cost to provide heating and hot water to these homes is estimated to be only £68 as well as giving a reduction in carbon emissions in the region of 80%. Every stage of the build process is monitored to meet the stringent design targets and we have developed our own bespoke quality assurance system in order to achieve this.
We have built new houses to Code Levels 3, 4, 5 and 6 (Zero Carbon) utilising many of
the lessons learnt from PassivHaus but using traditional building techniques to deliver cost efficiencies of the highest order. We have also undertaken low carbon refurbishments of existing properties, again adapting PassivHaus principles to achieve 80% reductions in CO2 emissions.
The Group is MCS accredited with a large in-house workforce currently embarking on a £2million retrofit of photovoltaic (PV) arrays. The PV is supplied by UK based manufacturer Romag, a subsidy of the Gentoo Group, resulting in significant cost savings and a complete in-house service from design through to maintenance.
Gentoo has also played a considerable part in a number of innovative projects such as
Retrofit Reality, Pay as You Save (working on one of only five national pilots) and Retrofit for the Future (undertaking three out of a total of only five contracts awarded in the North East).
We are continuously researching new, innovative technologies. Understanding and
implementing best practice in construction is key to meeting the Government’s ambitious targets and also demonstrates our commitment to creating long term sustainable properties, fit for the future.
